Online Tool Helps Pain Advocacy Community Address Growing Public Health Crisis

“In the Face of Pain®” Toolkit Now Available Online

Stamford, CT – (July 24, 2008) – Healthcare professionals and patient advocates working to alleviate suffering and improve the care of millions of Americans with undertreated pain now have a resource to help them achieve greater awareness and understanding of this serious national health problem.

“In the Face of Pain® is a free interactive toolkit that enables advocates to create individualized action plans, educational materials, and presentations tailored to a specific area of focus. It is accessible at

“The online version of the toolkit is a ‘must have’ for pain management advocates,” according to Micke Brown, BSN, RN, Director of Advocacy at the American Pain Foundation. “It empowers healthcare professionals, people with pain, caregivers or concerned individuals to create tailored advocacy plans to address a range of audiences on a variety of pain-related issues.”

The In the Face of Pain toolkit serves as a one-stop location for pain-related statistics and provides guidance on implementing advocacy outreach through various channels, including:

  • Legislative
  • Media
  • Community groups
  • Professional organizations

“We hope the toolkit will be valuable to patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals as they work to alleviate unnecessary suffering and improve pain care practice and policy,” said Pamela Bennett, RN, BSN, Executive Director, Healthcare Alliance Development at Purdue Pharma L.P., which developed the “In the Face of Pain” toolkit.

The introduction of the toolkit follows the recent relaunch of Partners Against Pain® (, a comprehensive resource that offers a wide range of information about various chronic pain conditions including osteoarthritis, low back pain and cancer; pain measurement and assessment tools; pain policy, legislation and community relations; and links to other relevant Web sites.

Purdue Pharma L.P. and its associated U.S. companies are privately-held pharmaceutical companies known for pioneering research on persistent pain.
