Purdue Pharma Appoints Maria A. Barton to General Counsel; Philip C. Strassburger Will Lead Intellectual Property Strategy and Litigation team

Barton will also serve as an Executive Committee member

STAMFORD, Conn., Feb. 23, 2017 – Purdue Pharma L.P. today announced the promotion of Maria A. Barton, Esq., Vice President, from Deputy General Counsel to General Counsel. Barton will become a member of the Executive Committee and will report to Purdue Pharma President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Timney, effective immediately. Barton succeeds Philip C. Strassburger, Esq. who will now serve as Senior Vice President, Intellectual Property (IP) & Litigation. Strassburger will continue serving on the Executive Committee and as President of Rhodes Advanced Technologies Group. He will also assume responsibility for Savant IP, a team that specializes in the use of informatics and analytics to develop and execute licensing strategies.

“Maria’s exemplary performance and personal qualities have distinguished her as a company-wide leader. She has helped ensure that we operate in full legal compliance while running our business effectively,” said Mark Timney, President and Chief Executive Officer, Purdue Pharma L.P. “In addition, she has expertly led our litigation efforts, while demonstrating leadership in advancing our company-wide Talent Management Strategy.”

Prior to joining Purdue in April 2016, Barton worked at Latham & Watkins in New York, where she was a Litigation Partner, representing clients in diverse industries. Barton served for more than 11 years as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York. In this role, she investigated and prosecuted federal criminal cases involving white collar fraud, tax schemes, money laundering, racketeering, public corruption and narcotics trafficking. She has tried a dozen felony cases and received the Department of Justice Director’s Award for Superior Performance on three occasions.

Barton has been highlighted as one of the world’s 100 remarkable Women in Investigations 2015 by the Global Investigations Review and recommended by The Legal 500 2014 and 2015 for International Trade and White-Collar Criminal Defense. Barton has held other prominent legal and investigative roles in her career, serving as counsel to international independent committees and a DOJ-imposed monitor.

Barton received her Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston University.

These leadership changes will enhance Purdue’s ability to address business critical legal and intellectual property matters.

“Given IP’s importance to our current business, as well as the business we are building, it is essential that we focus on this critical area,” said Timney. “During his 18 years at Purdue, Phil has demonstrated extraordinary creativity and skill in developing and executing IP strategies to incentivize drug development, and I am confident his best work on behalf of patients still lies ahead of him.”

Strassburger has served as Vice President and General Counsel since 2012. Strassburger joined Purdue in 1999 after serving as Senior Patent Counsel at Pfizer, Inc., and as an Associate at the New York law firms of Hedman Gibson, and Bryan Cave LLP. Before he began his legal career, Strassburger practiced as a Chemical Engineer in The Netherlands. Strassburger began his career at Purdue Pharma as Chief Patent Counsel, and was later named Vice President, Intellectual Property Counsel.

Strassburger received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering and his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from Tufts University, and a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Connecticut.
